Social Media Strategy for Law Firms

How to Create an Engaging Social Media Strategy for Law Firms

Social media isn’t just for influencers and retail brands anymore; it’s a critical tool for law firms aiming to build trust and stand out in an increasingly competitive legal landscape. Yet, managing legal social media effectively remains a challenge for many law firms. Why? Most fall into the trap of posting repetitive, safe content that fails to connect with their audience.

At Staxton, we believe that legal professionals deserve more exciting and effective social media strategies. This blog explains how your law firm can overcome common social media challenges by crafting engaging content, implementing a targeted social media strategy, and reinforcing your law firm branding. Read on to learn actionable tips to elevate your law firm’s online presence.

Why Social Media Matters for Law Firms

Before we jump into solutions, it’s crucial to understand why legal professionals need strong social media strategies. Here’s what’s in it for your firm:

  • Build Trust: Social media platforms allow law firms to demonstrate expertise through consistent, shareable content. Trust is vital in the legal industry, and social media offers a unique opportunity to foster it.
  • Expand Reach: Platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram give law firms access to vast audiences, making it easier to showcase your services to potential clients.
  • Enhance Engagement: Engaging content strengthens relationships with your audience, ensuring your services remain top of mind.
  • Promote Branding: Legal professionals often underestimate the importance of branding. Social media is an excellent tool to showcase your law firm’s culture, mission, and voice—key aspects that set you apart from competitors.

Social media isn’t just about visibility; it’s about building relationships, credibility, and trust. But where do you start?

The Biggest Social Media Problem for Law Firms

The most significant issue for legal professionals managing their social media presence is content creation. Much of the content law firms post is generic and uninspiring—think legal updates, news articles, and service announcements. While these posts are informative, they often lack personality and fail to capture the attention of their audience.

Why does this happen?

  • Reluctance to Take Risks: Law firms often stick to a conservative approach, fearing they may damage their reputation or come across as unprofessional.
  • Lack of Resources: Many firms don’t have a dedicated social media team or specialist, making it difficult to create thoughtful, engaging content.
  • Unclear Strategy: Without a clear plan, most firms follow a reactive approach to social media, focusing on basic updates rather than strategic engagement.

At Staxton, we’re here to change that. With the right mix of creativity and strategy, we’ll ensure your social media feeds break free from the monotony and start speaking directly to your audience.

Breaking Barriers and Driving Engagement

If you’re tired of posting the “same old content,” it’s time to adopt innovative techniques that make a statement. Here’s how law firms can create engaging legal content:

1. Leverage Video Content

Video isn’t just a medium for entertainment; it’s an essential tool for driving engagement.

  • Introduce Your Team: People want to work with people, not faceless corporations. Use videos to highlight the personalities behind your firm.
  • Simplify Legal Jargon: Create bite-sized educational videos that explain complex legal issues in simple terms—perfect for sharing on LinkedIn or Instagram.

Law firms using short, informative videos have seen their organic engagement rise dramatically.

2. Harness the Power of Animation

Adding creativity to your posts with animation can instantly set your firm apart.

  • Use animated videos to explain processes (e.g., Conveyancing for First-Time Buyers) in fun, engaging ways.
  • Introduce clients to the services you offer with visually appealing animated infographics.

Animated content not only grabs attention but also conveys information in a memorable manner.

3. Focus on Tailored Content

No two law firms are the same, so why should their social media look alike? Tailored content ensures your messaging aligns with your firm's unique ethos.

At Staxton, there’s no "copy-and-paste" content here. Instead, we create original posts based on your law firm’s branding guidelines, audience, and goals. From tailored carousel posts to in-depth infographics, everything reflects your firm's identity.

4. Strengthen Branding on Social Media

Your firm’s social media platforms should instantly reveal who you are and what you stand for. Here’s how to strengthen law firm branding:

  • Use consistent colours, fonts, and logos that align with your firm’s branding.
  • Develop a distinct tone of voice—whether professional, approachable, or authoritative—that resonates with your audience.

Clients trust a brand that feels polished and consistent across all channels.

Crafting a Strong Legal Social Media Strategy

Cool content is great, but it won’t succeed without a robust strategy. Here’s what your social media strategy should include:

1. Know Your Audience

Legal social media marketing isn’t one-size-fits-all. Start by analysing your target audience. Do they prefer thought leadership content on LinkedIn? Or are they on Instagram looking for visually engaging material? Tailor your strategy to meet your audience where they are.

2. Create a Content Calendar

Consistency is key to building trust. Use a content calendar to ensure your law firm posts regularly and across relevant platforms. Plan posts that include:

  • News or updates in the legal sector.
  • Client testimonials to build credibility.
  • Educational content like “5 things to know about Settlement Agreements.”

3. Measure Your Success

Regularly analyse your social media performance to understand what’s working and what isn’t. Metrics like engagement rate, post reach, and website clicks offer valuable insights to refine your approach.

  • Why do I need a Social Media Strategy?

You wouldn’t start a marathon without some preparation first. This is what we do in a Social Media Strategy, we cover core areas to help you get the most from Social Media. These include the following 5 core areas:

    1. Review and Analysis of your current social media presence
    2. Competitor Analysis
    3. Target clients you are looking to attract and engage with your content
    4. Road map of your strategy and with flexible KPIs
    5. A workable document your in-house team can use that is non-technical
  • Will Social Media get me more clients?

Overtime yes, but you need to be patient. Most people fail with Social Media as they don’t give it enough time or try to sell their services on every post they create. We help to create engaging content your clients will find value in.

  • How do I get my staff more engaged with our Social Media?

The first place to start is with your Social Media policy, what does it say they can / can’t do? The next step would be to discuss with your team why they don’t engage with the firm’s social media. This can be down to time constraints but more commonly they lack the confidence in creating content. We help to coach individuals to use Social Media as part of the Business Development process.

  • What are the best Social Media management tools to use?

There are literally 100s of Social Media tools you can use to help manages your law firm’s content. Here we list our top 5 favorite tools.

    1. Canva – even the free version has some great features to create content.
    2. Hootsuite – They offer a free version for up to 3 profiles, the only downside there is no reporting included.
    3. Buffer – Similar to Hootsuite this is free for up to a number of profiles
    4. Sendible – If you manage multiple accounts this works very well, including content hits and tips
    5. Google Trends – Want to know what is trending in the digital world or compare different legal services. Use this free Google tool.
