There are a number of ways a law firm can use LinkedIn to help them improve not only their profile but the brand of the law firm too. Below I highlight some key areas to help you to improve your presence and avoid any of the pitfalls.

1 – Profile picture, this needs to be a professional headshot, and the best place to find this is on your website. Not only does it carry consistency, but it will save you time. Do not have a profile photo of you 10m away, on a beach in your swimwear, or worse of all using a company logo. First impressions count.

2. No LinkedIn banner, this has become a very popular area over the last 18 months. But we still see a number of key profiles with the bland background. It takes less than 5 min to create a background, there are a number of free tools to create your banner, or you can ask us and we will provide one free of charge.

3. Job title under your name – If you put ‘Partner or Solicitor’ this tells me what your job role is not what you do. You are limited to 300 characters, put in there how you help your clients for example ‘I provide end-to-end residential conveyancing legal services’ or ‘I help start-ups with their commercial agreements. Whatever your role is, put how you help someone not what you do.

4. Summary, imagine if someone looked at your profile today. Does it tell them everything that you do and how you help your clients? Does it waffle on about how you have been established for over 100 years or does it show value in how you help your clients? If you have wealth of experience break this up into smaller chunks for your connections to read and bullet point key areas, you offer.

5. Feature Posts – This is a great way to make sure certain posts are pinned to the top of your profile. This can be for an event or a key milestone in your legal career. Remember to take the feature down once the event has taken place.

6. Boring Connection Invites – STOP sending generic invites to connect with people. Would you introduce yourself to potential clients as ‘Hi I would like to add you to my network’ No? You would introduce yourself and ask them what they do. Just because we are online doesn’t mean can’t be social.

7. Delay in your response means other people will respond. Everyone hates a ringing phone, but for some reason, we don’t mind ignoring requests or messages from people. How much does it take to onboard a client these days, £100, £200, or £300+? Even if this person isn’t a potential client, they may know someone who is. Have some pre-built responses to send to these types of messages to save you time.

8. Contact details – We all lead very busy lives, but missing our contact details from our profile makes it very hard for prospective clients to contact you. Include these 3 key areas:

  1. Website link
  2. Office group email
  3. Office group
